Here is my latest piece of art, a fantasy rendering no less! The Steam Dragon:
This is a proposal for a book cover for a novel called, Gorflax Greenhorn and the Eye of Sceleratus. I think this is hands down the longest amount of time I have ever spent on the black and whites on just a single character. The amount of detail made my eyes hurt at one point. All those rivets, bolts, scratches, cracks, welds and panels, let alone all of the other details to make a steam powered dragon!
Here are the black and whites:
The pay off was a very fast colouring time, which was good!
I haven’t drawn or painted a dragon in a very long time, so I was very much looking forward to this painting. One thing I really wanted to do was make the dragon look ‘organic’. The main reason for this was just simply for me that is an easier thing to illustrate, but mostly as for a book cover I wanted people to go, ‘Ooo, a dragon.’ Then have a closer look and go, ‘Hmm, that dragon looks to be made of metal – I’m now curious.’ So hopefully that’s what I achived.
My Next piece of art (if all goes to plan) will be something with a Crimbo theme.
